Karel Komzák

Komzák, Karel (1823-1893). Czech organist, composer, conductor, and director and founder of own private salon orchestra ensembles. Studied at the Prague Organists’ School. For a period director of the musical ensemble of the regiment of Prague Sharpshooters, but his most important contribution to the city’s musical life came with his founding (the first in 1854), organization and directing of his own salon ensembles. In 1862 Komzák’s main orchestra, noted in contemporary sources as his ‘First’ or ‘Great’ or even just ‘Salon’ Orchestra, formed the backbone of the orchestra of the Czech Provisional Theatre. His activities in Prague ceased when he left the city in 1865.
