Commentary:

The German-language newspaper Tagesbote aus Böhmen 16/1/1857 reported that ‘On the following Sunday takes place in the Hall of Žofín Island the musical trial [Musikprobe] to the Society Ball [Gesellschaftsballe] that will be occuring on 2nd February for the benefit of the Private Institute for the Education and Well-being of poor blind Children. The music is rendered by the newly organized ensemble of the Civil Sharpshooters Corps under the personal direction of Kapellmeister Mr Karl Komsak [Karel Komzák].’ Further news about the event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 17/1/1857 in a brief report noting: ‘On Candlemass (2nd Feb.) takes place, as in previous years, for the benefit of the Prague Private-Education and Well-being Institute for the Blind a Society Ball arranged by the Institute’s Director Mr Ovon Ottenkron. The most eloquent testimony of the wide-ranging effectiveness of this Institute as a sanatorium is the fact that since its establishment 1094 blind have been discharged as cured.’

Mercy’s Anzeiger
28/1/1857 reported the date and venue of this benefit Society Ball, and listed places from where admission tickets could be purchased. In the Old Town these were from: Mr Frei, apothecary at the White Unicorn; Math. Bernt, apothecary at the Golden Snake in the former Vienna Coffee house. In the New Town from Mr Johann Hubatka, apothecary at the Golden Griffon; Hier. Grohmann, Royal Court Jeweller; Josef Bauer, merchant and tradesman at nr.831 in the Horse Market [Wenceslas Square / Václavské náměstí]. In the Little Quarter at the apothecary at the Golden Eagle, and from Count von Ottenkron. On the day of the ball tickets would be available at the venue box office.

Mercy’s Anzeiger 27/2/1857 related that the Society Ball arranged by the Director of the Institute for the Benefit of the Education and Well-being of poor blind Children [Erziehungs- und Heilinstituts für arme blinde Kinder], Mr von Ottenkron, had secured a profit of 1023fl 40kr. This same news was published too by Tagesbote ause Böhmen 27/2/1857.
