Commentary:

Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/2/1857 reported that the annual series of ‘Musical Garlands’ that usually took place in the Konvikt Hall during lent would again be given this year. ‘For these have been gained [the services of] the laudably well-known Orchestra of Mr Komsak [Komzák].’ Advertisements for the first garland were published in Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/2/1857, and repeated on 27th, 28/2/1857 and 1/3/1857. They reported that subscription tickets to all six events in this lenten series cost 40kr, or to each individual event 10kr, and could be obtained from the music shop of Robert Veit.

A substantial and elaborate advertisement for the second event in this series was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 7/3/1857. The main body of the text reported: ‘Konvikt Hall. Tomorrow the 2nd Garland under the title Musical Portefeuille, including for the first time: the great March-Revue [Marsch-Revue] of J. Prochaska [Procházka] entitled: The Austrian Parade [die österreischische Parade] and the newest compositions of serious and sanguine genres for orchestra and solo-performance with the participation of the flugelhorn player Mr Mužik and the great body of concert-players of the Orchestra of the newly organised Sharpshooter’s Ensemble under the personal leadership of their first Kapellmeister Mr K. Komsak [Komzák]. To conclude, by request, Musicalischer Wettstreit [Musical contest], a great Potpourri by Chellard. Admission 7 o’clock. Finish at 12 o’clock. Admission at the box office 12kr.’ Each side of the advertisement comprised an ornately bordered section in which further information was provided about tickets and the programme. In vertically arranged writing, the two sides of the advertisement read ‘For the first time: Flügelhorn Concerto of Mr Mužik.’ and ‘For the first time: Die österreichische Parade. Great March-Revue by J. Prochaska. By Request: Musikalischer Wettstreit. Potpourri by Chellard.’ In the top border there appeared a notice that subscription tickets, as well as advance tickets at 10kr to the individual events in this series were available from the music shop of Robert Veit. In the bottom border of the advertisement, the text noted that subscription cards could also be obtained on Sundays from the Restaurant in the Konvikt building. This advertisment was repeated in the newspaper on 8/3/1857.

The Vergnügungsanzeiger of Mercy’s Anzeiger 8/3/1857 reported ‘Today Sunday... Konvikt Hall: Garland [Kränzchen].’ No further details were given by the source.
