Advance news of this event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 18/11/1857. The occasion was the public performance of works submitted for a competition, sponsored by the Prague music publishing house Christoph and Kuhé, for dance compositions to be performed in the 1858 Prague Carneval. The source related: ‘Sunday 22nd Nov. takes place in the Hall of Žofín Island at 4.30pm, the public performance of dance compositions for the 1858 Carneval with prizes from the music publishing house of Christoph and Kuhé. The orchestra scheduled is from the musical ensemble of the Royal Regiment of Baron von Alemann under the direction of its Kapellmeister Mr Fr. Czermak [Čermák], who has also orchestraed individual particular numbers.’

An advertisement for this occasion appeared in Tagesbote aus Böhmen 22/11/1857. The source announcing the performance on that same day at 4.30pm on the Žofín Island of the prize dance compositions from the competition of Christoph and Kuhé. The orchestra was noted to be that of the military ensemble of the Royal Infantry Regiment of Baron von Allemann under the leadership of its Kapellmeister Mr Franz Čermak. Admission 12 kr.’

A brief account of the event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 23/11/1857. The correspondent, signed ‘=’, related: ‘Yesterday found in the Hall of the Žofín Island the Performance of prize-winning and runner-up dance compositions that were submitted for the prize-competition of the music publisher Christoph and Kuhé. The pieces, 12 in number, were executed by the ensemble of the worthy Royal Infantry Regiment of Baron von Alemann under the personal leadership of Kapellmeister Czermak. The very numerously assembled public applauded all of the compositions, of which several had to be encored. The prize-winning pieces will be printed in an Album by the publishers.’ Further details, including lists of the performed compositions were forthcoming in the newspaper the next day. Tagesbote aus Böhmen 24/11/1857 reported:
‘At the Production arranged last Sunday of dance pieces for the prize-competition of Ad. Christop and W. Kuhé, the following pieces were awarded prizes: „Der Humoristen“, Waltz by Fr. Kavan. Katherinen-Quadrille“ of G. Franz. Gallop Gaillard“ by Hugo Müller. Herminen-Polka“ by Leop. Doležal. Clochette-Polka Tremblante“ by Joh. Ticháček. La petite Coquette“ Polka-Mazur by Rich. Milowitsch. The following were commended: Telegraphische Depeschen an den Carneval 1858“ Waltz by Count von Zedwitz. Alicen-Quadrille“ by Ed. Ralzer. Carnevals-Galopp“ by G. Schmidt. Charlotten-Polka“ by Em. Seyf. Die Grille“ Polka-Tremblante by G. Czerny. Terpsychoren-Polka-Mazur by Ant. Faulwetter. As judges were Kapellmeister Buřinský and Čermak [Čermák], music institute director Mr Jelinek, and Messrs Pavlis, Michel and choir director Ulm.
