Franz Kawan
Kaván, František (1818-1896). Czech pianist, choir master and composer. Studied philosophy and law at Charles University, as well as piano at the institute of Josef Proksch. Employed as a music teacher in Prague aristocratic circles. In the early 1850s he was ‘Koncertmeister’ [Bohemia 26/7/1850] to Count Chotek. Lumír 5/10/1854 described him as teacher of music to Count Chotek. Later, for a brief period (1863-1864), he was the choirmaster of Prague Hlahol. Director of music in the Týn church from 1871 until his death. Active as a pianist and appeared often in Prague concerts. Composed many salon works for piano as well as some didactic works for the instrument, also a number of Czech song and choral settings.
