Orphanage of St John the Baptist
No details of the concert programme were included in the Národní listy and Prager Zeitung 5/3/1862 announcements, and in the news published by Bohemia 6/3/1862. The only additional information related by the Národní listy report was that half of the concert’s proceeds were to be donated to an unnamed orphanage. The Prager Zeitung source was included slightly more information by noting that the benefitting orphange was that of St John the Baptist. This source also related that tickets for the concert on 8th March (and evidently postponed), would be valid.
This concert by Eduard Gerstberger may not have take place since no further details of the proposed event appeared in subsequent issues of Národní listy, in Prager Zeitung or in Bohemia, or else these periodicals chose not to report upon the event. Past concerts given by Gerstberger on 4/12/1859 and on 17/11/1866 had been subjected to scathing criticism by the Czech press, the Dalibor 10/12/1859 critic of the former occasion refusing to comment upon the first event as it was considered to be ‘an amateur entertainment, which we cannot judge’; the critic in Národní listy 20/11/1866 asserting that it was not fitting to expound upon the ‘amateurism’ of this pianist.
This performance by Gerstberger was not reported upon by the newspaper Prager Morgenpost.
