Name: Orphanage of St John the Baptist
Commentary:Orphanage of St John the Baptist. Prague orphanage. Tagesbote aus Böhmen 21/6/1857 reported ‘The Private Orphange of St John the Baptist celebrates its [founding] festival on 24th June. At 8.30 will be a solemn procession in the Chapel of the Institute, where a sermon and High Mass will be given. There will follow the admittance of orphans by lottery in the examination hall.’ An account of this particular event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 25/6/1857, noting that at this time the Orphange gained 8 new pupils with four leaving. During the preceeding year it numbered 93 pupils, including 3 supported by the Maria Theresa Foundation, 39 ‘Institutswaisen’ – presumably supported by the Institute itself, 41 supported by the Schwarzenberg Foundation, and others.’
