This event was not reported by the German-language newspapers Bohemia, Prager Morgenpost and Prager Zeitung. Národní listy 23/11/1861 published a review, signed ‘-bl.-’, that ‘Yesterday, on St Cecilia’s day there took place in the Žofín Academy a first evening musical entertainment, and the institute celebrated this day of the patron saint of musicians in an unpretentious yet direct manner. Taking part were members of the women’s and men’s chorus, as well as pupils of the second singing class, performing solo works, choral works with evident relish and love. Of Czech compositions they performed songs by Martinovský, Procházka, Zavrtal, Jelen, Škroup, then Czech folksongs arranged for female choir that were successfully performed by pupils of the second class for singing; then the [men? - undecipherable from the source] performed a duet by Bendl and a chorus by Zvonař.’ A specially composed poem to celebrate the Saint’s day was read by V. Crha. The correspondent concluded with the statement that the event represented a good beginning to this series of entertainments and expressed the hope that they would continue.
The event was almost certainly directed by J.L. Zvonař, then the director of the Žofín Academy.
