Procházka, Jan Ludevít (1837-1888). Czech composer, pianist and music critic. His early musical education was gained from his father and then from the composer Leopold Měchura. Student of Smetana’s piano school and became his advocate and determined supporter. Smetana’s influence upon Procházka the composer was evident in the latter’s early interest in the developing techniques and methods of neo-Romanticism. However, he also composed many Czech songs and choruses in popular quasi-folk style. As a critic and musical organizer he was hugely influential, helping establish the Prague choral society Hlahol (1861), the publishing house Hudební matice (1871) and the Society for Chamber Music [Jednota pro komorní hudby] (1877). One of the five founders member of the musical circle of the Umělecká beseda.
