Národní listy 10/1/1863 published news of a series of ‘Redouty’ [‘Redout’ or ‘redoute’ was a term, common to both Czech and German, for a masked ball]. The source related: ‘Redouty [Redouts]. On Sunday in the New Town Theatre will take place the first masked ball. In total there will be during this year’s Carnival 7 masked balls, specifically the first on Sunday and the last on Shrove Tuesday.’

Lumír 8/1/1863 reported ‘First masked ball takes place on Sunday 11th January in the New Town Theatre.’

The Tagesprogramm daily almanac of Prague social events published by Bohemia 11/1/1863 announced: ‘Evening in the New Town Theatre: Redoute.’ Redout, or redoute, was a term for a masked ball. A series of six of these events were given in the New Town Theatre during the Carnival season of 1863. A review of the occasion appeared in Bohemia 12/1/1863. Apparently the event was not a great success: ‘(The Redoute yesterday) in the New Town Theatre suffered the destiny of all first Redoutes, that is to say it was feebly attended. It is, as though the Praguers themselves must first through the course of the Carnival warm themselves before they take pleasure in the humorous masques; the last Redoute in the series is very full [well attended].’ The Hall was said to have been only half full during the first hours of the event, only by 11pm becoming fuller. In such circumstances the lack of interest in costumes was declared to be understandable. The correspondent related that there was nothing notable to record from the previous day’s ball.
