News of this second concert in the series of ‘Musical Garlands’ appeared in brief reports published by the newspapers Bohemia and Morgenpost on 23/10/1858. The former noted the participation of Schmidt, identified as being a pupil of the Prague Conservatory, who was to perform the Bériot Concerto, and of Anton Reidl, a pupil of ‘Bezečny’ [Josef Bezecný, 1829-1904, Czech pianist and later music director in Vienna]. Reidl played an unattributed set of variations on Czech national songs, and a composition of his own, a concertante Salon Polka. The Morgenpost 23/10/1858 text related similar information and identfied the composer of the set of Variations as [Julius] Schulhoff. Neither of these reports specified the participation in this event of Weber’s Orchestra, but the ensemble was noted as appearing in this event by the day’s Tageskalender published in Bohemia 23/10/1858. This also recorded that the event took place during the evening.
Schmidt was also noted by the Dalibor 28/10/1858 review as being a graduate of the Prague Conservatory. The register of past Conservatory students published by the Conservatory source by Branberger, Johann, Das Konservatorium für Musik in Prag (Prague, 1911), p.353, points to this individual being one ‘Franz Schmid, Prague, Violine [studied] 1852-1858’. Concerning the success of the event, the review related only that the soloist’s performance and the playing of Weber’s orchestra, ‘pleased the numerous audience.’ There was no mention of Reidl or his contribution to the event.
