Eduard Francevič
Nápravník, Eduard (1839-1916). Czech conductor and composer. Educational background included study at the Prague Organ School (1853-1854) and at the Piano Institute of Petr Maydl. He became a teacher at the latter in 1856. In 1861 he gained the position of music director to Prince Yusupov in St Petersburg. He remained employed in Russia for the remainder of his life, including as conductor of the Imperial court opera, and had substantial influence on the progress of Russian musical development during the late nieteenth century. However, he frequently visited Bohemia and maintained positive links with the Prague musical establishment. Nápravník was also active as a composer, his works including 4 operas, 4 symphonies and a great deal of instrumental music, mainly for the piano.
