Bohemia 6/6/1854 published a notice that a festival performance would take place in the Estates Theatre in the presence of their majesties Franz Joseph and Elizabeth. The theatre would be especially lit for the occasion. The programme would begin with a reading by Joseph Bayer given with a backdrop of pictoral scenes and with the playing of the Jubelouverture and Festmarsch by Škroup. Decorations and costumes were noted to be new and a mechanical sun appeared during the scenes, an ‘elektro-galvanische Sonnenapparat’ by the Royal-warranted mechanician Romuald Božek. This was followed by the second and third acts of Flotow’s opera Indra [Indra, das Schlanegenmädchen].
An account of this event was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 7/6/1854. The occasion was described as ‘the most brilliant event in the current festival days of Prague.’ The performance began with Škroup’s specially composed overture ‘that contained a verse ... of the national anthem’ [this was almost certainly the work he had written in 1834 for the wedding of the Emperor Ferdinand]. This was followed by Miss Frei [Freyová] speaking the festival reading to the accompaniment of the Festmarsch, after which another backdrop was unfurled. The royal party left following the second act of Flotow’s opera. Outside the theatre had congregated a great crowd. The royal carriage passed over Charles Bridge to a brilliant firework display.
