Advance news of this event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 28/3/1854. A report related that ‘the local Tonkünsler-Gesellschaft [Society of Musical Artists] would through the participation of the Gentlemen and Ladies of the Žofín Academy, the Cecilia Society, the pupils of the local Music-Conservatory, the members of the orchestra of the Royal Estates Theatre and many dilettantes perform Mendelssohn’s great oratorio Paulus in the Hall of Žofín Island on 11th April 1854. The solo parts are the following: Miss Meyer, Miss Weiß [Weissová], Messrs Emminger, Steinecke and Dr Schmidt.’ An advertisement was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 11/4/1854 relating this same information and noting that the event was being given [as were all Tonkünstler-Societät concerts] for the benefit of the Institute for Widows and Orphans [of Musical Artists].

The Czech-language arts periodical Lumír in its sixth supplement of 1854 published on 28/3/1854 reported that ‘In Holy Week the Society of Musical Artists will perform Mendelssohn’s great oratorio
Paulus.’ No further details were given by this source.

Mercy’s Anzeiger 9/4/1854 published an advertisement for this event with identical wording to that published two days later by Der Tagesbote, but in addition providing information about ticket prices and libretti for the performance. Admission to the circle cost 2fl, to the salon 1fl and to the gallery 20kr. The libretto could be purchased for 10kr. Tickets and libretti were available from the art and music shop of Joh. Hoffmann and on the day of the performance from the venue box office. The performance was scheduled to begin at 5pm and end at 7pm. The advertisement was repeated in Mercy’s Anzeiger 11/4/1854.

A review, signed ‘J.H.’, of this event was published in Tagesbote aus Böhmen 13/4/1854. The critic reported that the performance, given by members of the largest local musical societies under the direction of Kapellmeister F. Skraup [Škroup] was ‘a complete success and was altogether worthy of the great applause with which it was honoured by the very numerously assembled public. Of the soloists, as well as of the chorus and orchestra, only good, indeed for the greater part excellence, can be reported. In particular the energy of the choir, the pure and secure intonation in the highest registers was laudable - an accolade for which the wind, especially the trumpets, were also truly worthy.’ Of the soloists Miss Meyer and Messrs Emminger and Steinecke particularly impressed in performing the most substantial rôles; Emminger was described as being most excellent, both through the feeling and expression of his performance as well as through the very good quality of his voice [Stimmdisposition] reminiscent of the most beautiful period [of his career]. Miss Meyer repeatedly entranced the listeners with the freshness and purity of her voice, combined with spotless intonation’. The critic was particularly impressed with her expressive performance of the aria ‘Jerusalem, die du tödtest die Propheten’. Mr Steinecke ‘was rewarded with repeated and well-merited applause... [for his] noble and accurate performance’. Mr Versing’s singing of Paulus was ‘deeply moving’, the critic noting his skilled use of tremolando in pertinent places for expressive effect.

A review, signed ‘V.’, was also published Bohemia 12/4/1854. The correspondent reported that the concert attracted a ‘very numerous’ audience, and that the performance of Mendelssohn’s ‘grandiose’ oratorio was a ‘brilliant success.’
