Advance news of this event was published by Bohemia 5/8/1859, noting that ’On Monday will be performed under the leadership of the Choir Director [Chorregenten] Wenzel Proška in the parish church of St James at 10 o’clock Horák’s Requiem for the soldiers fallen in battle, in [the performance of] which Mr Lukes will also participate.’
The unsigned Dalibor review, which noted that the Requiem was given specifically for fallen soldiers in Italy, noted that ‘This beautiful and spirited work was sung with great precision and nuance, and made a deep impression. Among the singers was J[an] L[udevít] Lukes, whose moving performance inspired all.’ During the spring and early summer of 1859 Austria had conducted a military campaign in Italy in an attempt to hold on to its Italian territories. It culminated in a heavy defeat for the Austrian forces at the Battle of Solferino (24/6/1859).
