Accounts of the funeral of Rudolf Skuherský were published by Prager Morgenpost 12/10/1863 and in considerable detail by Bohemia 12/10/1863. The correspondent, signed ‘n.’, of the former related: ‘The funeral procession of Professor Skuherský took place yesterday accompanied by a numerous crowd of people. At 3pm the carriage set out from the home of the deceased on the Horse Market [Václavské náměstí]. At the head of the funeral procession were members of Sokol in funeral attire, with the Society’s flag, then followed the musical ensemble of the Society playing a funeral march. After Sokol followed the singing society „Hlahol“ who sang funeral odes... Thereafter stepped the clergy and then followed students who carried the coffin on which there was laid a wreath decorated with a tricolour [Slavonic] band. Two students behind the coffin also carried on a cushion wreaths with tricoloured ribbons. Behind the coffin followed the mourners, we noted the Mayor Dr Bělsky, the assistant Mayor [Bürgermeisterstellvertreter] Dittrich, the city councillors and city politicians, many deputies, members of the Guilds, the directorate and teacher of the local technical Institute and its pupils.’
A similar although slightly more detailed review was published by Bohemia 12/10/1863. The correspondent considered that the crowds who gathered were almost as numerous as those at the funeral of the late Mayor, František Pstroß. The route of the procession was then noted, specifying that after a blessing given by the rector of St Heinrich [Sv Jindřich], the cortege left Skuherský’s house on the corner of Heinrichsgasse [Jindřišská ulice, at the corner with Václavské náměstí], then passed along the Horse Market [Václavské náměstí], Am Graben [now Na příkopě], Hibernergasse [Hybernská ulice], Heuwegsplatz [Senovážné náměstí] to the Neuthor [New Gate, no longer in existence] where there was a guard of honour. Along the way all windows were open and with people looking out from them. At the head of the procession were members of Sokol, with the banner of the Society and wearing Sokol caps and black waistcoats emblazoned with the Society’s emblem. They were followed by the Sokol orchestra, members of the Prague men’s singing society Hlahol, and a contigent of clergy. The coffin was draped in the slavonic colours and was carried by members of Sokol and students. The remainder of the procession consisted of students and teachers of the Technical Institute [Polytechnic], members of the city Council and deputies of the parliament, members of various commercial guilds and other corporations. Amongst all of these it was noted that only slavonic colours were worn. There were also around a hundred torchbearers (partly members of Sokol and partly students). The length of the procession was noted to have stretched the entire length of the Grabe [Na příkopě]. Also present were many youngsters carrying lanterns. Along the way to the city gate funeral music was performed alternately by Sokol and by Hlahol. From there to the Olšanská cemetery the coffin was accompanied by Sokol, Hlahol and and extraordinarily large crowd.
Rudolf Skuherský (1828-1863) had died on 9/10/1863. A mathematician, he became the first Professor of Geometry in the Prague Technical Institute (Polytechnic) from 1852. He actively promoted and undertook teaching in the Czech language as well as German, and was an active member of the patriotic Czech gymnastic society Sokol.
