An advertisement for this event was published by Prager Morgenpost 24/5/1863. The source announced: ‘Gross-Venedig Island [Štvanice] (formerly Hetz Island). Pentecost Monday [Pfingstmontag] great Folk Entertainment [Volks-Vergnügen], comprising music, song, dance and curiosity [Schaulust]. Particularly marked by a Concert performed by 2 orchestra of the Regimental Ensemble of the worthy Royal Infantry Regiment of Count Gyulai, and Wolf’s Singing Society. At half-past 6 an astonishing illusory Aerial Phenomenon [Luft-Erscheinung]. In the upper hall Dance Reunion. Commencing 4 o’clock.’
This event, with its multifarious content obviously sought to the curiousity of the public. The ‘aerial phenomenon’ perhaps constituted a hot-air balloon display. Ballon events such as this seemed to be given quite frequently during the summer 1863, evidently a fashionable and popular entertainment. ‘Wolf’s Singing Society’ was most likely a traveling groups of entertainers who were then visiting Prague; no record of this group appearing in the city appears in previous 1863 sources. Interestingly, no mention was made of the cost to attend the event.
