The Tagesprogramm of the German-language newspaper Bohemia 19/1/1863 noted: ‘8pm in the Žofín Island Hall: Machinists’s Ball [Maschinistenball].’
An unsigned review of this event was published by Národní listy 25/1/1863. The correspondent remarked: ‘Machinists’s Ball [Ples strojnický], which took place on Monday 19th January in Žofín Hall, enjoyed a substantial attendance. The entertainment was lively and informal. It may be said that the class of workers, of which [the event] mainly comprised, were turned out impeccably. Čamara [national costume - red coats with gold braid], tail coats and ordinary coats were all allowed equally, although salon coats [salonní čamara] prevailed. Of factory owners present was Mr Andros of the Company of Mr Rustona, who sent to the box office the considerable donation of 50zl and at 9pm came to the Ball with the engineers of his factory, where he was entertained for some hours. Also the factory of Mr Martinek was present. From other factories were attending engineers, draughtsmen and supervisors. We will relay the profit from the Ball as soon as possible.’ The reference to the profit from the Ball indicated this was a charitable event, most likely for ill factory workers.’
