Anton Benevic Benewitz

Bennewitz, Antonín (1833-1926). Czech violinist and violin teacher. Studied at the Prague Conservatory under Mořic Mildner (-1852) after which he joined the German Estates Theatre Orchestra as first violin. In 1862 he spent two years as concert master of the Salzburg Mozarteum. Returned to Prague and the Prague Conservatory in 1865, first as Professor of violin after the death of Mildner, then as its Director. Bennewitz had an important rôle in bringing chamber music performances to Prague audiences, first in the 1860s with the quartet of Goltermann, later as principal violinist of the quartet of the Prague German Music Society (1880), and was instrumental in founding the world famous Czech Quartet.
