Commentary:

The Vergnügungsanzeiger of Mercy’s Anzeiger 6/10/1854 reported ‘Today Friday... in the Café Buresch... Concert’. An advertisement was also published by this issue of the newspaper. Remarkably for a Prague café advertisement of this time, the text was mirrored in both the German- and Czech-language and was specific in identifying the ensembles performing music at this venue. The source announced: ‘In the newly renovated Cafe of Jan Bureš [Kaffee des Johann Buresch], in Dominikánské ulici, plays on Friday from 4pm until midnight the excellent Sextet of Mr Černý, and on Sunday also until midnight the no-less splendid Sextet of Mr Březovský.’ The advertisement, signed by Buresch [Bureš], drew attention to the whole of the venue having been most tastefully renovated. This advertisement was repeated in the issue of Mercy’s Anzeiger 9/10/1854. The German version of the advertisment specified ‘spielt jeden Freitag [plays each Friday]’ while the Czech version gave ‘hraje v pátek [plays on Friday]’. On subsequent Fridays throughout the autumn season records appearing in the weekly Friday Vergnügungsanzeiger of Mercy’s Anzeiger that specify an event in Buresch’s Café have been assumed to include performances by Černý’s Sextet.’
