Commentary:

Bohemia 24/7/1862 announced details of the religious festival due to take place on the feast day of St James in the Minorite church in the Old Town. This was due to begin at 6.30am with a sermon given in Czech by the Dominican priest Candidus Ruth, then at 10am before the High Mass a sermon in German given by the Pastor of Holy Trinity church,Nowotný [Novotný]. At 11am the High Mass would be celebrated by the Pastor of the Týn church Heinrich, in which under the direction of the choir director Mr Proška the Missa solemnis in D major by Brixi, a graduale by the same and an offertorium by Michael Haydn would be performed. The solo parts would be taken by Miss Hřimalí, then by Messrs Lukes and Rafael. At 4pm a sermon in Czech would be said by Pastor Lemberger, after which Vespers would be given.

The Národní listy 25/7/1962 announcement of this event noted the date, time, venue, works to be performed and participating soloists under the direction of Proška. The information corresponded with that published the previous day in Bohemia, the wording and order in which the report was written perhaps indicating that the Czech newspaper’s text was lifted and translated from that of the German-language newspaper. The most significant differences were that less detail was given and that the composer of the Mass to be performed was not identified by the Czech source. Specifically, the Czech newspaper noted: ‘Religious festival. Today on the feast day of St James takes place in the Minorite church in the Old Town the annual festival for the patron of that church [St James]. The main religious service takes place about 11am by His Reverence the Týn Pastor Matyáš Heinrich, honorary canon at Vyšehrad. To be performed under the directed of Kapellmeister Mr Proška will be a festival Mass in D major, followed by a gradual by Brixi and offertorium by M. Haydn. The solo parts will be sung by Miss Hřímalová, then Messrs Lukes and Rafael. Czech sermons are at 6.30am and 4pm.’

The composer of the mass was identified by these two reports only as ‘Brixi’. Most likely this was František Xaver Brixi. Which soloists performed in which compositions was not specified by the listed source reports.
