Commentary:

The programme is reproduced in concert order according to the Národní listy 15/10/1861 report. The soloists in the two quartets comprised Jan Nepomuk Maýr, J. Rafael, Josef Reichel and Karel Strakatý. The unsigned Národní listy 20/10/1861 review noted that the entertainment ‘in all respects satisfied the very numerous assembled audience, among which there were to be found our celebrated [politicians] Palacký and Rieger.’ Following the concert was a dance entertainment, which apparently lasted until after midnight.

Čas 15/10/1861 reported the programme and participating soloists for this third autumn beseda, as well as noting the date and venue. A brief, unsigned review followed in the newspaper on 17/10/1861. This related that the event ‘was again numerously attended’ and that present were Palacký and Rieger. ‘The concert part was short but interesting. Two quartets, in which besides Messrs Maýr, Strakatý and Rafael, also Mr Reichel participated, received vociferous applause. Mr Reichel performed a Moravian folksong very prettily, although there was still evidence of his hoarseness. The same accolade obtained Mrs Schmiedová, whose phenomenal alto and excellent technique is well known. The favourite actor Mr Šamberg we became acquainted with for the first time as an excellent speaker, his elegant and spirited performance so fascinated the public that he was twice vociferously curtain called. After the concert began the dance entertainment. Me are able to affirm that these besedas are an essential part of contemporary life, as evidently testifies the lively attendance.’

Bohemia 1/10/1861 reported that ‘(The Autumn Besedas) take place now in the newly refurbished Konvikt Hall on 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th October, then on 6th, 13th, 20th and 27th November. At the start of each Beseda [will be a] concert; arranged by Kapellmeister Mr Mayr [Maýr], followed by dances
