Commentary:

Although the Dalibor 20/8/1860 review stated that participating in these examinations were Miss Anna Sobotková, Miss J. Šejvánková and Miss S. Pivlová, the source did not specify which particular works were given by which of these performers. However, the Dalibor critic did note that Grünfeld, aged only seven, performed from memory a Fantasie on themes from I Capuleti ed i Montecchi ‘with astonishing certainty’, and that Karel Šebor was not only a ‘skilful’ pianist, but also a ‘talented’ composer, as demonstrated by his Fantasie on themes by Tittl. Although not categorically stated by the text, Šebor’s playing of his own composition was implicit.

The source remarked that the event was successful and that pieces for piano solo for multiple pianos by both ‘classical and native composers’ were included in the programme. Of the works listed the correspondent remarked that almost all were played very successfully, and especially the pieces by native composers. For programming the latter, the reviewer saluted the institute’s director. Such a choice of compositions was deemed to be preferable for teaching amateurs than slight works by the likes of Cramer, Voss and Goria, helping the students develop a more refined aesthetic taste.
