Commentary:

The Dalibor 10/5/1860 report stated that the soloist in the aria by Mendelssohn was to be a ‘Miss Škroupová’. However, the subsequent unsigned Dalibor 20/5/1860 review stated that the work was sung by M. Soukupová. According to this review, the solo vocalists in the Choral Symphony comprised Miss M. Soukupová, Miss J. Panatovičová, Josef Reichel and Karel Strakatý. The concert as a whole was considered by the Dalibor correspondent to have been very successful, criticism being made only of the solo quartet in the symphony’s finale which could have been more accurate. The review commented that the occasion was the best production given by the Žofín Academy since the institute had come under the directorship of Alois Jelen. The programme is reproduced in concert order according to the Dalibor 10/5/1860 report. Given the performance of Beethoven’s Symphony, which necessitated substantial orchestral forces, the ensemble most likely comprised musicians of the Estates Theatre, of which Škroup was conductor from 1837-1857.
