Commentary:

Mercy’s Anzeiger 23/2/1857 reported that ‘Tomorrow the Masked ball [Maskenball] in the Royal Estates Theatre begins at 6pm. It ends at 12 o’clock.’ The notice reappeared in the following day’s issue of Mercy’s Anzeiger. An identical threatre bill appeared in Tagesbote aus Böhmen 24/2/1857. No further information was given by these sources.

A further theatre bill published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 24/2/1857 anounced the date and time of this event, and related the costs of costume hire per day. From the Garderobe in Herrengasse nr.896 a Domino cost 2fl and a character-mask 2fl. From the Garderobe of the Estates Theatre in the day these prices were both 1fl, and a Domino in wool 30kr.

A brief, unsigned, review of this event was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/2/1857. This related that the event was very well attended and that although there were many costumes they were of very little interest, the public seeming in this respect to be quite apathetic. The music was precisely performed by the ensemble of the Royal Infantry Regiment of Baron von Wernhardt.
