Commentary:

A notice was posted by the restauateur of the Arboretum in Der Tagesbote 25/6/1854 announcing that due to bad weather the reunion in the Royal Estates Arboretum had already been cancelled several times. The attention of the public was therefore drawn to the date of the next reunion having been arranged for Monday 26th [June]. No mention was made by the source of the musical content of the occasion. Mercy’s Anzeiger 24/6/1854 also reported that this event arranged by Mr Pohl would take place on 26th June after having been postponed twice due to poor weather.

On 26/6/1854 Mercy’s Anzeiger published news that the ‘Music Festival and Reunion of Mr Pohl’ in the Arboretum was expected to be very popular and that a special train would run to the [nearby] station at Bubeneč from Prague [presumably from the State Railway Station - the Staatsbahnhof, now Masarýkovo nádraží] at 6pm and not [as presumably previously announced] at 5pm.

A review, unsigned, of this event was published by
Mercy’s Anzeiger 27/6/1854. The correspondent reported that ‘Yesterday’s music festival [Reunion] at the Baumgarten had the rare luck that the weather was finer than had been seen for a long time, and did not have to be postponed to another day, like most other festival events of this kind. There had indeed been bad weather passing over the town in the first hours of the afternoon; only towards evening the bleak sky brightened up and brought us such a nice evening as we had not enjoyed for a long time. It was not surprising that numerous people of all classes converged upon the Arboretum in all sorts of vehicles. The special train that left Prague at 6 o’clock brought a great contingent. The band of the Royal Infantry Regiment of Archduke Albrecht, which played selected pieces under the direction of Herrn Urschitz, received the loud applause of the elegant audience; and so the Reunion [organized by] Mr Pohl ... had the pleasure of a very lively and numerous attendance.’
