Commentary:

The Dalibor 21/10/1858 announcement of these musical events related only that ‘On the days of 20, 21, 22 and 23 of this month will take place the annual examinations of pupils of the piano institute of Mr Jos. Prokš. The programme contains some interesting numbers.’

A more detailed report was published in Lumir 21/10/1858. This related that the institute’s examinations usually occurred at the end of the school year [June/July], but were only now taking place. They were to occur over three days, not over four as intimated by the Dalibor announcement, and would then culminate on the afternoon of Saturday 23 October with a programme of twelve numbers performed by male and female mature pupils of the school. Similar information appeared in pre-event news published by Bohemia 19/10/1858, the German newspaper noting in addition that the first day (20 October) involved the examinations of the elementary students; the next day the middle students; the final day the middle and higher classes. On each of the days female students performed in the mornings, 10am until 1pm, and male students from 3pm until 6pm. In the afternoon of 23 October the concert would be given by pupils of the higher class.

News of the culminating concert of these examination performances, described as a ‘Prüfungsproduktion’ - in essence a trial-concert of pupils - was published by the German daily newspaper Der Tagesbote on 20 October. This text also noted that the concert was to take place between 3pm and 6pm. Although no specific details of the programme were announced, the report revealed that ‘The programme contains a great deal of interesting numbers.’ The most detailed listing of the event’s programme was published by Prager Morgenpost 19/10/1858. This listed the programme in detail, identifying works as well as participants.

No review of the production appeared in any later edition of either of the Czech periodicals Dalibor or Lumír.
