Commentary:

Tagesbote aus Böhmen 9/2/1854 published news that ‘Mr Gorsky [Górski] will give a Ball on 14th February’. For this the ‘entrepreneur’, whose events were renowned for their ‘Elegance and society... had chosen the spacious Apollo Hall’. A substantial audience was anticipated.

An unsigned review of this event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 16/2/1854. The correspondent remarked upon the society attending the event and the decoration in the hall. The venue was said to have been full and the occasion was noted ‘not to have lacked amusing incidents.’ These included a lady becoming attached to the rear button of a gentleman’s tailcoat during a galop, and two gentlemen quarrelling about an engagement. The source contained no comment upon the musical content of the occasion.

Lumír 16/2/1854 also published an unsigned review of this event. The correspondent noted
‘Among all the balls and dance entertainments that local teachers of dance arrange, the events of Mr Górski excel for their choice society and elegant tone. Mr Górski again proved with his ball, taking place the day before yesterday at the Apollo, which could boast a fitting elegance and beauty... Refined, numerous society excellently entertained itself in the beautifully embellished hall until daybreak. The new Quadrille of Mr Górski that ended the first part of the dancing, was liked greatly.’ No further details about the event or its musical content were given by this source.
