Commentary:

Václav Proška was at this time the director of the choir at Sv Jakub. His new Ave Maria setting in the Czech language, Zdrávas Maria, was considered by the unsigned Dalibor review to be ‘successful, [with] clever handling of the voices and music appropriate to the text.’ The critic also considered that Proška’s offertorium with orchestral accompaniment was worthy of praise, testifying to the composer’s learning and noting how the good performance ensured that the work had a ‘pretty’ effect.
