Commentary:

News of the first performance in Prague of Veit’s Mass in D major, perhaps the most accomplished and effective Mass setting by a nineteenth-century Czech composer before that of Dvořák, appeared in the German-language Prague newspaper Tagesbote aus Böhmen 26/7/1857. The source reported: ’Yesterday, Mr Veith’s [Veit] great Mass in D major, op.44 was given a performance in the Church of St James. The solo parts were entrusted to the hands of Misses Bergauer and Wollner, and Messrs Strakatý and Lukes; the chorus comprised an excellent cast. The foremost resources of the Conservatory and of the Estates Theatre orchestra united with many other musicians, so that even the instrumental part too came into its own. With many assisitants, the Reverend Abbot of Strahov, Dr. H. Ziedler, celebrated the Mass.’ No further details were given by this source.
