Commentary:

Prager Morgenpost 16/1/1859 announced in a brief news report as well as in a large advertisement that lottery tickets would be given to ladies attending this public event for 18 prizes of ‘the most modern [i.e. fashionable] Paris Ball-fans and bouquet holders’. Such incentives to attract visitors to these public dance events, whether through lotteries, free gifts or through emphasizing some unique and attractive feature of the occasion or location were commonplace, especially during the Carnival season as different venues competed for the custom of the paying public. This event was noted to be continuing until past midnight.
