Commentary:

Prager Morgenpost 7/11/1863 reported in its section of daily news: ‘Schiller Festival [Schillerfeier] of the German Reading Room. The Reading Room of German Students presents on Monday evening at 8pm in the Žofín Island Hall the Schiller Festival. This will open with the Schillermarsch by Meyerbeer, followed by the Festival reading given by the Society President [i.e. the President of the Germand Reading Room]. A patriotic chorus performed by the German Singing Societies preceded the said Festival reading, whereupon songs [Lieder] and instrumental pieces alternated, finally there performed the Regimental Ensemble of the Archduke Sigismund. All German Societies of Prague have been invited to the Festival, for ladies the galleries are reserved.’ The participating German choruses would have comprised the vehemently German-patriotic Flöte, Aëde and Arion, all Prague societies with a substantive membership and following.
