Prager Morgenpost 23/4/1863 published news of this concert, announcing: ‘Concert. The favourite member of our Stage, Mr Krén, arranges on 1st May a concert in the Žofín Island Hall, that promises to be very interesting through both the choice of pieces and the participating forces.’ Either the date given for the concert by this source was incorrect, or the event was subsequently postponed until 3/5/1863.
A detailed report was published of this event by Prager Morgenpost 2/5/1863. The correspondent reported: ‘The concert, which Mr Kren arranges on 3rd May in the Žofín Island Hall at 12noon, affords an array of appealing programme numbers... and guarantees a concert with the uncommon characteristic of diverse interest. The programme is as follows: 1. „Der Himmel im Thale“, Lied, sung by Mr Kren [Krén], „der Schauspieler und sein Kind“, declamation by Mrs Burggraf, des Sängers Abschied“ sung by Mr Nachbauer, „Ungarische Volksweisen“ on the ’cello, performed by Prof. Wagner, „Gute Nacht“, declamation by Mr Sauer, „Duo“ for piano and violin, performed by Miss Čermak [Čermáková] and Mr Bruckner. In addition there will be several other interesting vocal and instrumental works, of artistic choice.’ The violoncellist would have been Mořic Wagner, then Professor of violoncello at the Prague Conservatory and principal ’cellist in the Estates Theatre orchestra.
A similar report appeared in the German-language newspaper Bohemia 3/5/1863, reporting: ‘(Concert). At noon takes place the concert of Mr Krén, participating in addition to the concert-giver will be Mrs Burggraf (through a declamation „der Schauspieler und sein Kind“), Mr Nachbauer (through two Lieder performances), Professor Wagner (on the ’cello), Mr Sauer (through a humorous declamation) and Miss Čermak [Čermáková] and Mr Brückner (in a Duo for piano and violin), with Mr Krén singing a Lied „Der Himmel im Thale“ by Staudigel, an Aria by Haydn, „die Theilung der Erde“ and with Mr Nachbauer a Duet, „die Werbung“’.
Prager Zeitung 3/5/1863 also published news, dated 2/5/1863, of Krén’s concert. The source reported: ‘In the concert, that Mr Jos. Krén arranges tomorrow at 12 noon in the Žofín Island Hall, the concert-giver sings two Lieder and a Duet with Mr Nachbauer; in addition participating are Mrs Burggraf, Miss Čermák [Čermáková] and the gentlemen: Professor Wagner, Sauer and Brückner.’
A review, signed ‘-ý.’, of the event was published in Prager Morgenpost 6/5/1863. The correspondent related that the concert was not well attended for such a concert given by an esteemed member of the local theatre. Krén (spelt now with an acute accent on the e, which was missing from the earlier report), was reported to have performed three pieces: ‘a song [Lied] „Der Himmel im Thale“, by Staudigel, „die Theilung der Erde“ by Josef Haydn, and with Mr Nachbauer the favourite Duet: „Die Werbung“ by Storch. His performance, as is self-evident, was very good, and was not wanting for applause. In place of Mrs Burggraf, who should have performed a declamation, Miss Hollerstein sang a Lied with true musicality, cleanly and tastefully. Mr Nachbauer gained considerable success with the singing of two Lieder: „des Sängers Anschied“ and „der Bettlerliebe“. In addition, Professor Wagner contributed with a Serenade of his own composition and the „ungarischen Wolksweisen“ by Rimmer (for the violoncello). Mr Sauer performed the well-known humorous declamation „Gute Nacht“ with great credit. However, the highlight of the concert was provided by a Duo for piano and violin by Thalberg and Beriot, which Miss Wilhelmine Czermák played in the company of Mr Brückner. Co wholly accomplished, consummate technique; remarkable surety and accuracy; brilliance in execution; so sharp and direct interpretation of the character of this composition (a Hugenottenphantasie): all these [characteristics] were drawn together with such extraordinary success as I myself have not known for a very long time. The audience accorded this so favourite artiste tremendous applause...’
The German-language newspaper Prager Zeitung 7/5/1863 published a review, signed ‘!!’, reporting upon both this concert and that given on the following day (4/5/1863) in the Žofín Island Hall. Of the concert given by Krén the correspondent related: ‘Of the two concerts, which took place on Sunday and on the following day in the Hall of the Žofín Island, Sunday’s [concert] was of the opera singer Mr Joseph Krén, Monday’s [concert] was arranged for the benefit of an injured musician. Common to both was that in comparison with other Žofín-Island-Hall-Concerts they were modestly attended, and that with few exceptions comprised only performances of solo pieces. Of duos [being performed], especially interesting in the first [concert] were „die Werbung“ duet by Storch, sung by the concert-giver and Mr Nachbauer, and then the instrumental Duo on themes from Meyerbeer’s „Hugenotten“ for piano and violin by Thalberg and Beriot, in which the pianist Miss Wilhelmine Čermák had an opportunity to display her brilliant technique in accompanying a solid performance by the well-known violinist Mr Bruckner. In addition, Messrs Krén and Nachbauer performed two songs [Lieder], Professor Wagner two pieces for violincello, and Mr Sauer a humorous declamation.’ The remainder of the review detailed Monday’s concert.
The performance order of the programme cannot be ascertained from the various sources.
