Private Society for the Support of the Prague Poorhouse
Mercy’s Anzeiger 7/12/1854 published advance news of this event, reporting that ‘The so-called „Society Ball [Vereinsball]“, at which congregates the most elegant of Prague Society and the profit from which passes to the Private Society for the Support of the Poorhouse of Prague, will take place on 17th January in the Hall of Žofín Island. The musical rehearsal is scheduled for 14th January.’ No further details were given by this source. Mercy’s Anzeiger 18/12/1854 published further news of the occasion, reporting ‘The so-called Society Ball, to which in the year’s series of events will be visited by the most elegant of Prague Society, and which indisputably each year provides a turning point for numerous young hearts, will, as we have noted, take place on 17th January, with the rehearsal for this Ball on the 14th January.’ The reference to a turning point for young hearts most probably related to the ball, as the highlight of the year’s society events, representing a romantic social meeting place.
Bohemia 24/12/1854 published news that ‘On 17th January will take place on Žofín Island the Vereinsball, a favourite [event] over a long series of years, the profit from which is destined for the Private Society for the Support of the Poorhouse under the protection of His Excellency Count Camill Rohann.’
