A large advertisement was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 7/1/1857 announcing the date and venue for this musical trial of dance compositions to be given at the ‘Flora Fest-Ball’ on 18/2/1857 and the forthcoming series of Soirées dansantes [the dates of which were also specified]. The source noted the participating ensemble and that it would be personally directed by Kapellmeister L. Jeschko [Ješko]. Admission to the trial cost 10kr and entry was from 6pm. Subscription cards were available for gentlemen [ladies were not specified] at 3kr for each of the Soirées dansantes with admission too to the Fest-Ball. A subscription to all events cost 50kr. These could be obtained from the music shop of Rob. Veit. This advertisement was published again in Mercy’s Anzeiger on 8/1/1857.
A brief review of this event was published by Mercy’s Anzeiger 10/1/1857. The correspondent reported that ‘The day before yesterday there took place in the Konvikt Hall the musical trial to the Concert Soirées with dancing and to the ‘Flora-Fest Ball’. The magnificent string orchestra of the Baron Wernhardt Infantry under the incisive leadership of Kapellmeister Mr L. Jeschko [Ješko] performed dance compositions altogether very successfully, so that several had to be encored. Particularly pleasing was Mr Jeschko’s Waltz Die flotten Geister.’ The text concluded by commenting that the ball committee had arranged this event ‘in the manner of a concert production’, and that this promised well for the success of the entertainments of the later soirées and ball. Evidently the works were performed by the orchestra as a concert and were not danced to on this occasion.
