Mercy’s Anzeiger 1/1/1857 reported that ‘The musical trial that is taking place on 3rd January is not for the Reunion organised by the Bürgerresource [Měšťanská beseda - Civic circle], but is a Beseda for the benefit of the Czech National Theatre.’ A brief review, signed ‘-r’, of this trial was published on 4th January by Mercy’s Anzeiger. The correspondent related that ‘Yesterday at 5pm in the Hall of Žofín Island there took place a rehearsal for the Czech Besedy [für die Böhmischen Besedy] and was delightful in its just as numerous as distinguished attendance. The dance pieces were played in a very successful manner with great precision by the newly [re-]organized ensemble of the Royal Prague Civil Sharpshooters Corps under the leadership of Kapellmeister Komsak [Komzák]. Many had to be encored.’ No further details were given by the source.
Der Tagesbote 3/1/1857 also published news of this event, noting: ‘Today (3rd) at 5pm takes place on the Žofín Island the musical trial to the annual „Besedy“, which will be given on 26th January and 9th February. The dance pieces will be performed by the newly organized military ensemble [Corpscapelle] of the Royal Warranted Prague Civil Sharpshooters Corps under the direction of their newly engaged Kapellmeister Mr K. Komsák [Komzák], which will be on this occasion be performing for the first time in public.’
Although the musical ensemble of the Sharpshooters was itself not new, the body came under the direction of Komzák in 1856 and was quickly re-organized by him.
Lumír 8/1/1857 published a brief, unsigned review of this event. The correspondent remarked that ‘The musical trial to this year’s beseda turned out very well. Among the dance compositions were many good and vigorous [pieces]. The orchestra was directed by Mr Komzák, who on this occasion laudably appeared as the director of the newly arranged musical ensemble of the local Sharpshooters.’ No further details were given by the source.
