Kommentar:

Advance information about this event was published by Der Tagesbote 3/8/1854, noting its date [on the day of the paton saint of the church, St Mary of the Snows], time and venue, and that the occasion was arranged by the Kapellmeister of the church, J.N. Mayr [Maýr, later the director of the Czech Provisional Theatre opera]. The works to be performed were listed. The Mass by Beethoven was described mistakenly by the source as ‘der grossen Messe in C#’.

A similar report appeared in Mercy’s Anzeiger 3/8/1854 reporting ‘Saturday 5 August on the Festival of [St] Maria Schnee at 10 o’clock the director of the choir Mr J. Mayr [Maýr] performs in the Franciscan Church Beethoven’s great C major Mass, together with a Graduale [of a] soprano aria with clarinet solo by Cherubini, then an Offertorium Ave Maria for 8-part choir with wind accompaniment by Mendelssohn.’ No further details of this event were given by this source. A brief report was published by
Mercy’s Anzeiger 4/8/1854 noting that on Saturday 5 August there would take place in the New Town monastic church of the Franciscans the Maria of the Snows festival will be celebrated.

Mercy
’s Anzeiger 8/8/1854 published a brief review of this event, the correspondent reporting ‘The performance arranged by Mr J.N. Mayr [Maýr] of Beethoven’s C Major Mass for the Maria-of-the-Snows Festival [Maria-Schnee-Feste] and of other previously mentioned works was, with the participation of renowned forces, entirely worthy. In addition to Miss Wagner and Mr Lukes performing solo parts there was also Miss Kutschera, a very promising singing pupil of Mr Mayr. Miss Wagner was almost certainly Franziska Wagner who was then active in Prague, appearing frequently during the early 1850s in opera performances at the German Estates Theatre.
