The Czech-language arts periodical Lumír reported in its supplement 21 of 16/5/1854 that ‘To celebrate the visit of His Majesty the Emperor more than a thousand uniformed miners are coming to Prague from the silver mines of Příbram and other mines around Prague.’ In the evening they would undertake a torchlit procession to the Castle where they would sing the national anthem.
A detailed description of events surrounding the visit of the Emperor Franz Joseph to Prague was published by Der Tagesbote 5/6/1854. During the course of the procession of the royal party from the railway station, the source reported that events had included a parade of miners many of whom were from the town of Příbram and 200 from Kladno. They had included musical bands, of which the Příbram contingent numbered 60 men. Behind the colliers marched printers, goldsmiths, tawers and tanners, the last two groups of whom also had their own musical ensembles. No mentions was made by the source as to the music given by these groups. Mercy’s Anzeiger 3/6/1854 reported that ‘Early yesterday arrived here [in Prague] nearly 500 miners with their band [Musikbande] from the Royal Silverworks in Příbram.’ Lumír 3/6/1854 reported that ‘From Příbram on 1st June 490 miners with their musical ensemble and with banners travelled to Prague for the local festival.’ They were apparently joined by miners from Hořovice and from Kladno.
A descriptive account of the Emperor’s visit was published over three pages of the Supplement 27 to the Czech-language periodical Lumír 1854 on 6/6/1854. The progress of the royal entourage through the city was reported in detail. The correspondent noted how from the palace of Count Šlik [Schlick] to the monastary of St Ursula stood 1400 miners with their banners and musicians. They had come from Příbram, Buštěhrad, Kladno, Brandýs nad Labem and thereabouts. A great festival gateway had been erected at the monastary, the work of Messrs Ullmann and Bělský. This included decoration by Josef Mánes and a Czech lion forged partly from silver.
