Under the title of ‘Musica sacra’ Prager Morgenpost 21/11/1863 reported upon two events featuring historical church music to be given in Prague churches on St Cecilia’s Day. The first was a performance in St Joseph’s Church [Sv Josef] including works by Palestrina, Pierre de la Rue and Josef Krejčí. The second took place in the church of St Francis and was given by the Czech male-voice singing society Hlahol. The report pointed out the contrast between the two programmes, noting of the Hlahol event that: ‘Making an interesting contrast to this [i.e. the other performance] is the programme of „Hlahol“ on Sunday at 10am in the Franciscan Church of a Mass by Durante, one of the late masters from the celebrated Neapolitan school, the school which around the year 1740 effectively ended the Classical period of Italian art [‘welche Schule um das Jahr 1740 gewissermaßen die classische Periode der italienischen Tonkunst abschließt.’ The conflict of time between these two events probably caused further animosity between Prague musical factions loyal to the patriotic and nationally Czech-orientated Hlahol and those allied to the conservative Krejčí.
