HAYDN, Franz Joseph : Austrian national hymn [anthem], vv

Kommentar:

The daily local news section of the German-language newspaper Bohemia 19/4/1863 reported that ‘(On the eve of the birthday of His Majesty the Emperor Ferdinand), who today attained his 70th year, there took place yesterday a military Serenade [militärische-Serenade], at which all the military musical ensembles present here [in Prague], six in number, namely the Dragoons’s ensemble, the Artillery ensemble, then the Infantry ensembles of the King of Prussia, Archduke Sigismund, Count Gyulay and Baron von Steininger, participated. The bands assembled before the Little Quarter barracks and set forth at 7.30 with euphonious playing, the Dragoons’s ensemble accompanied by torchbearers, the other ensembles accompanied by lantern bearers, for the Royal Castle on Hradčany, where they deployed themselves in the first Castle Courtyard. Thereupon they... [performed] many musical compositions, the production being introduced and concluded with the Austrian national anthem. His Majesty the Emperor Ferdinand and His Royal Highness Archduke Franz Karl stood during the production at a window from the brilliantly lit royal appartments looking out over the Castle square. The rest of the windows were occupied by members of the royal household.’

A further description of the occasion appeared in Národní listy 19/4/1863. The correspondent reported: ‘Birthday of His Excellency Emperor Ferdinand, who today attained his 70th year, is this year splendidly celebrated. Yesterday at the evening festival the entire musical ensembles of local regiments arranged a parade into the Royal castle a performed there a serenade.’
