A brief review, signed ‘-k.’, of this event was published by Tagesbote aus Böhmen 6/8/1857. The correspondent reported: ‘Among the already mentioned Examination productions of our very worthy local musical institutes, was that held on 1st August in the Music Institute of Mr Karl Hodytz [Karel Hodyc] in the Little Quarter. The programme included a significant number of very interesting pieces, amongst which were many from such great masters as Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel, Tomaschek [Tomášek] etc. The performances themselves were excellent, even by the beginners – after 10 months of lessons – who performed smaller pieces quite correctly. Next, advanced students exhibited in more difficult compositions – including several with orchestral accompaniment – great bravery, dexterity in properly applied nuance, and a skilfulness that led us to forget that we were listening to students. The distinguished audience appreciated the same through deserved applause in honourable fashion.’ No further details were given by the source. The ‘orchestral accompaniment’ was not identified.
