Prague Conservatory. The origins of the Conservatory date back to 1808 with the establishment of the Society for the Advancement of Music in Bohemia, the intention of which was the creation of a dedicated Bohemian music school in Prague to nurture music education and practise in the Czech lands. A further founding aim was  to provide a source of professional musicians for the Estates Theatre. The Conservatory opened for teaching in 1811. Pupils were either instrumentalists or singers; the singers were later sectioned into the opera school and the concert school. Students were also educated in music theory. Piano was not taught at the Conservatory until the end of the nineteenth century.
