Stanislaw Moniuszko

Moniuszko, Stanislaw (1819-1872). Polish composer and conductor. After his early largely provincial musical studies he spent three years in Berlin (1837-1839) as a pupil of Rungenhagen. He then settled in Vilnius as a music teacher and organist but soon developed an association with the local opera which produced his seminal Polish opera Halka in 1854. In 1858 became conductor of the National Opera in Warsaw and later was attached to the Warsaw Conservatoire.
