François-Adrien Boieldieu

Boieldieu, François-Adrien (1775-1834). French composer, pianist and conductor. Studied initially in Rouen, where he was born, and produced his first opera there in 1793. After an abortive attempt to found a local school of music in the city he moved to Paris where, in 1797, he gained enormous success with his opera La Famille suisse and was appointed professor of pianoforte at the Paris Conservatoire. Between 1803 he conducted the Imperial Opera in St Petersburg. Returning to Paris in 1811 he output a string of new operas, most of which enjoyed further considerable success. Works include 32 operas (3 in collaboation with contemporaries), chamber and piano music, and songs.
