Anton Grigor'yevitch Rubinstein
Anton Grigorevitch
Rubinstein, Anton Grigor’yevitch (1829-1894). Russian pianist and composer of German-Polish descent. Displayed a prodigious pianistic talent as a child and began touring widely throughout Europe at the age of 11, even appearing in England before Queen Victoria. In 1845 he studied composition with Dehn in Berlin. His early career fluctuated in direction and situation, in 1846-1848 struggling to survive as a teacher in Vienna and Bratislava. In 1848 he gained aristocratic patronage in Russia and thence began to establish himself securely as a pianist and composer. In 1858 he became Imperial Music Director in St Petersburg; a year later he founded the Russian Musical Society and then in 1862 the St Petersburg Conservatoire. Hugely prolific as a composer in a wide range of genres from opera to orchestral music and chamber and instrumental works.
