Schnabel, Joseph Ignaz (1767-1831). German composer. Initially taught music by his father before becoming a choirboy in the church of St Vincent in Breslau. He abandoned training to become a priest to follow a career as a schoolmaster and then from the late 1790s worked as a violinist and then organist in Breslau churches. Later he became Kapellmeister in the local theatre as well as a conducter of local concerts. His output of compositions is dominated by a substantial body of sacred works.
