Titl Antonín Emil (1809-1882). Czech composer and conductor. After a largely provincial musical education he arrived in Brno at 17 years of age and began his career as a musician by teaching and by playing the double bass in the local theatre. He also composed, and his first opera, Die Burgfrau (1829) was performed there in 1832. After a brief spell working in Olomouc he moved to Prague where he enjoyed considerable success as a military music Kapellmeister. In 1840 he settled for the rest of his life in Vienna where he was engaged as a conductor, first of the Josephstheater (1840) and then of the court opera at the Hofburg (1850-70). Prolific as a composer and arranger, writing many contemporaneously popular songs that were published in multiple editions, many pieces for his military music ensembles, and a substantial corpus of orchestral and theatre works.
