Commentary:
Sokol. Prague Czech gymnastic society, formed in 1862. Conceived and operating as a patriotic Czech-orientated institution and regarded with suspicion by the Austrian establishment for its nationalist Czech ethos and active appeal to younger generation. Sokol formed its own musical ensemble, which performed at gymnastic events given by the society. The original office and rooms of the society were located at the house Apollo, rented from the religious order of the poor sisters of Horažďovice.
