Mayer, Wihelm (1831-1898). Czech composer and teacher. Studied harmony and counterpoint with Pitsch. Began his career as a civil servant in Budapest (1856-1859), and later worked in that capacity in Vienna and Graz. In the latter he became director of the local music society (1862-1870). He began composing while still in Prague and became well regarded, both in the Czech capital during the 1860s and 1870s and abroad, for his works and as a teacher of composition. His pupils included Busoni and Weingartner. Output of progressive programmatic and semi-programmatic orchestral works, an opera and songs and choruses.
