Commentary:

Mercy’s Anzeiger 26/11/1854 reported news that during 6 weeks and 3 days of the forthcoming 1855 Carnival, two Beseda events would take place on the Žofín Island on 7th February and 14th February. No further details were given by this source. On 2/12/1854 the newspaper announced that ‘The Reunions (Besedy) for the benefit of the construction of a Czech Theatre will take place on 7th and 14th February 1855 in the Žofín Hall.’

The Czech-language periodical Lumír 28/11/1854 published news that the ‘Besedy, which will be held on Žofín Island during Lent for the benefit of the national theatre, are arranged for 7th and 14th February 1855.’ On 11/1/1855 Lumír reported that ‘Preparations are already underway for the Besedy on Žofín. The first of these elegant national entertainments will be on 7th February, second on 14th February. Both begin at 8 o’clock.’ No further details of these events were given by this source. However the report added news about the the favourite ball for the benefit of the poor (the Institute for the Poor) under the protection of Count Camil Rohan, noting that it would take place on 17th January in the Žofín Hall.
